Australian-based electronic music mogul Fractures showcases the diversity of his artistry in his sonically transformative LP Shift, out on June 22nd along with brooding focus track ‘Secret’. In parts reflecting the same club-stomping energy of his past discography, and in others experimenting with new sounds, the record represents the turning of a new leaf for the musician.
After amassing over 40 million streams globally, Fractures has been hibernating – perfecting his craft and the next phase of his already celebrated career. The introspective process was a catalyst for Shift’s lyrical content, metaphorically presented through cinematic imagery of the environment.
The album release follows a string of successful singles including ‘Burnt’, ‘Medium’ and ‘Last’, being added to playlists such as Spotify’s Global Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds AU/NZ, as well as cultivating incredible support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, triple j, The Guardian and The Fader.
Spending a significant amount of his time over in the UK this year, Fractures has been booked and busy in sessions and writing camps with artists including Sultan & Shepard, Will Clarke, Joe Hertz, Emmeline, Julia Church, ATRIP, il:lo, Frameworks, Jon Calver, and many more.
With the release of Shift, this singular electronic artist has triumphantly marked a new era. After some years of sonic transformation, experimentation and growth, Fractures has shifted from his ambient/liminal roots, now exploring more technical and energised production.
Opener ‘Burnt’ sets the tone with a deep house anthem, before latest single ‘Do Nothing’ combines Fractures’ vulnerable vocals with ethereal synths to evoke, in his own words, “the sensation of flying blind”. ‘Maybe Later On’ and lead single ‘Medium’ mark a departure from Fractures’ folk roots with an indelible blend of pummeling beats and spacey tones, while ‘Strangers’ and ‘Last’ form Shift’s powerful middle section, opening the album up with widescreen sonic arrangements and big choruses. Focus track ‘Secret’ is a brooding string-laden masterstroke set within a deep shuffling groove, before the gentle synth pads and intricate percussion of ‘Bereft’ and ‘Tact’ usher the LP to a close, and ‘Turn Rose’ caps off with a thrilling climax.
Speaking on the record, the brains behind Fractures, Mark Zito, says, “Shift represents change for me … Each song is the result of different individual influences, artists that overlapped with my sensibilities, and of me exploring different approaches to electronic music. The whole album represents the progress of that journey of learning that I’m still on.”
